          Toolmaker III, 2nd shift (4 pm – 1 am)

          Department: Tool Room

          Reports to: Tool Room Supervisor

          Position Summary:

          Under limited supervision, performs a variety of operations to construct, repair or clean machine shop tools, gauges, fixtures, jigs or dies for use within the establishment. Assignments performed require the use of ordinary tool room operations and may involve work involving accurate relationships and extremely close tolerances. May assign machining of parts to machinists and make sketches for own or other’s use in making parts of subassemblies.

          Key Responsibilities

          Performs mold repair work on cavities and cores due to damage or wear. Notes any changes to molds, inserts, parts, etc. Must document work and keep accurate records.

          Dissembles and assembles molds, analyzes and solves basic mold problems including flashing conditions, galling, venting, cooling problems, etc. Assembles, repairs, inspects, cleans and polishes molds using skill and care while handling and polishing critical surfaces.

          Performs project leader duties on new mold construction or Engineering revisions to existing molds as assigned and is responsible for the quality and successful on-time completion.

          Plans construction procedures and methods, selecting the proper materials.

          Makes allowances for shrinkage during rough machining and prior to the heat treating of tools.

          Lays out, fabricates and assembles metalworking dies, molds, and machine tool fixtures by analyzing blueprints, sketches, models and engineering or shop specification.

          Uses a variety of machinist’s hand tools and precision measuring instruments.

          Sets up and operates lathes, milling machines, electrical discharge machines, surfaceand cylindrical grinders.

          Computes dimensions; determines machining and material or parts required.

          Performs precision work to exacting tolerances and dimensions.

          Recommends revisions in design and/or substitutions in material based on “machine-ability” or fabrication problems encountered.

          Solves problems relating to unusual material, work-holding arrangements, machine settings, fabrication methods, and production process.

          Monitors and verifies quality in accordance with statistical process or other control procedures.

          May provide guidance to lower level toolmakers.

          Stones andpolishes mold components.

          Maintains work area in a neat and orderly condition.

          Supports all company safety and quality programs and initiatives.

          Other responsibilities may be assigned from time to time as needed, based on the evolution of the companyand the requirements of the department/position.

          Requirements:

          High School Diploma/GED and 4+ years as Toolmaker Level II or equivalent experience; or equivalent combination of education and related experience.

          15+ years of experience and Journeyman Tool Maker certification preferred.

          Ability to read and write English and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, procedure manuals, and blueprints.

          Ability to perform basic math and interpret and executive work instructions.

          Moderate physical demands; bending, pushing, pulling, climbing, lifting upwards of 50 to 75 pounds, standing for long periods of time.

          Strong experience/skill with stoning and polishing of mold components is preferred.
